Errea Comunicación redesigns El Diario de Hoy in El Salvador
8 September 2011
In 1936, Vieira Napoleon Altamrinao and Mercedes Altamirano Madriz founded a newspaper with the maxim that still presides over its editorial pages: "Hay que hacer un gran pueblo en Centroamérica” (A great nation in Central America must be created).
El Diario de Hoy, the leading Salvadoran newspaper, which just turned 75 years old, remains committed to that mission, in the place where it was born, deep in the heart of San Salvador, close to the people.
The third generation of the family, with Fabricio Altamirano now at its head, has not forgotten for a moment its commitment to the development of Central America through a brand of journalism that is rigorous, austere and independent. And this in a small yet complex country, plagued for years by a bloody civil war and now by frightening levels of violence.
El Salvador is a country that has journalistic media of the highest quality. The young Altamirano family members wanted to celebrate the 75th birthday of the newspaper in their own way: with more and better –if possible– journalism. For this renovation, during 2011, they invested time and resources without fireworks or creating false expectations. Today, September 7, El Diario de Hoy reaches its readers completely renewed in both content and graphic approach.
Under the leadership of Director Eduardo Torres and Art Director Norma Ramirez, Salvadoran readers have available a product that is closer to their interests, more sensitive to the realities of society and which is more open and participatory.
This process of re-thinking has been profound and has involved all levels of the company, which is well aware that journalism, quality information, is their principle hallmark. Errea Communicación, together with journalist and media consultant Gabriel Sama, has driven this process and is the author of the new design.
El Diario de Hoy that readers now have in their hands is divided into two main areas of content, one focused on public life and another on private life. These areas are separated by the opinion section and an inner cover photo that visually reflects the daily happenings in the country. The paper is more orderly and easier to navigate. New sections have been created to meet growing demands. For example, Tendencias (Trends), which looks at all issues that concern, interest, excite ... the everyday man or woman. It also includes the Zona EDH, which, under its own brand, engages the participation of readers and Internet users, consolidating the media strategy.
The digital edition of El Diario de Hoy is much more than a digital edition: elsalvador.com <http://elsalvador.com > is the country’s leading online platform and a genuine link with the large Salvadoran community abroad, especially those living in the United States.
The redesign of El Diario de Hoy enhances their DNA and strives to be distinctive. The project also foresees a new offering of weekly products. This will begin next Sunday with the new supplement Tendencias (Trends) and will continue with others on leisure and free time (Tentaciones [Temptations]) and economics and business. The EDH 2011 plan will culminate with the complete renovation of the newsroom.
